Master of Business Communication: Are You an Owl, Pitbull, Elephant, or Chimpanzee?

Transitioning from sports to the business world can be challenging, but understanding different communication styles can make it easier. The Insights Discovery model, which categorizes communication preferences, can be incredibly helpful.

To make it more relatable, I’ve translated the model into four animals:

The Owl  (Analytical/Blue)

  • Key Traits: Logical, detail-oriented, and methodical.
  • Communication Style: Owls appreciate clear, factual communication. They thrive on data, structure, and thorough analysis—much like how athletes review their performance stats to improve.
  • Tip: When communicating with an Owl, be precise, provide all necessary details, and back up your points with facts. Send a mail upfront so that they can prepare them selves. Owls don´t like surprises

The Pitbull  (Assertive/Red)

  • Key Traits: Direct, results-driven, and decisive.
  • Communication Style: Pitbulls are action-oriented and prefer straight-to-the-point conversations. They value efficiency and quick decisions, similar to how athletes focus on achieving clear, immediate goals. They don´t shy away of telling you the truth directly into your face.
  • Tip: When interacting with a Pitbull, be concise, focus on results, and don’t shy away from being direct. They like to have the final decision.

The Elephant  (Supportive/Green)

  • Key Traits: Caring, cooperative, and patient.
  • Communication Style: Elephants value relationships and harmony. They are great listeners and appreciate a collaborative approach, much like the team spirit fostered in sports.
  • Tip: When communicating with an Elephant, show empathy, focus on relationship-building, and create a supportive dialogue.

The Chimpanzee  (Expressive/Yellow)

  • Key Traits: Enthusiastic, creative, and sociable.
  • Communication Style: Chimpanzees thrive on energy and big-picture thinking. They enjoy lively discussions and are motivated by ideas and innovation, similar to the excitement of preparing for a big game.
  • Tip: When engaging with a Chimpanzee, be enthusiastic, encourage creative thinking, and keep the conversation dynamic.

Understanding these different styles can help you leverage your communication skills effectively as you transition into the business world. By recognizing and adapting to these styles—whether you’re an Owl, Pitbull, Elephant, or Chimpanzee—you can build stronger relationships and achieve greater success in your new career.
