Reinventing Your Goal Setting: What Athletes Need to Know for Life Beyond the Game

So, you’ve crushed it in sports, but now you’re stepping into a whole new world, and guess what? The game has changed. But don’t worry, because setting goals for life beyond sports isn’t as scary as it sounds. It’s just about taking what you already know and giving it a little twist. It really is that “simple”! Let’s dive into how to reinvent your goal-setting game!

1. Think Big, but Start Small (Because You’ve Got the Time)

In sports, you had big goals—winning championships, breaking records, being the best. And that’s awesome. But in life, big goals can take a bit more time. So, start by thinking big, but break those goals down into smaller steps. Want to be a top lawyer, doctor, or entrepreneur? Cool, but start with the basics, like researching what you need to get there or acing your next exam. It’s like training for the big game—one practice at a time. Believe me it works, I have shown it in my own life after sports!

2. Stay Flexible (Because Life Loves to Mess with Your Plans)

Remember that time your game plan had to change at the last minute? Yeah, life does that too. So, when you’re setting goals, be ready to pivot. Maybe your dream changes, or something unexpected comes up. That’s okay. Just like in sports, being able to adapt is key. Keep your eyes on the big goal, but be open to changing the path to get there. And it will happen that life will test you – be prepared but not scared!

3. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection (Because Nobody’s Perfect)

In sports, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to be perfect—hitting every shot, winning every game. But in life, perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Set goals that push you to improve, even if you’re not perfect. It’s about getting better, little by little. So, if you miss a step or hit a bump in the road, don’t sweat it. Just keep moving forward. A mentor once told me that I need to be 60% ready. Everything else will come on the way. It´s better to start with 60% than to wait until you have 100%. Because reaching 100% is in most of the cases not happening (aka you will never start)!

4. Celebrate the Wins (Even the Small Ones)

Remember how good it felt to win a game? Well, life has its wins too, and they deserve to be celebrated, even if they’re small. Did you finally finish that project? Awesome! Did you take the first step toward your big dream? High five! Celebrating your progress keeps you motivated and reminds you that you’re on the right track. Maybe you already realized in the other blog posts – I like to celebrate! This is the best and an important part!

Reinventing your goal setting for life beyond sports is all about using what you’ve already learned and applying it to your new path. So nothing new to you, you just need to adapt a bit! Think big, stay flexible, focus on progress, and celebrate every win. You’ve got everything you need to succeed—now go out there and crush it!
